A bag of hand-me-downs is an offer, not an obligation to store everything. Before accepting it, ask what is included, whether the items are a gift or a loan, and whether unwanted pieces may be passed along. That short conversation prevents a clothing donation from becoming a collection of equipment you cannot identify or a return obligation you did not know existed.

Sort clothing before it enters the drawer

Open the bags when you can make decisions, keeping packaging and small pieces away from the baby. Separate clothes that fit now, likely near-future clothing, and items that are unsuitable for your household. Check actual fit and season rather than relying entirely on age labels. A heavy outfit in the next size may not match the weather when it becomes useful.

Inspect fasteners, seams, trim, and fabric condition. Remove items with loose parts or damage that affects use. Wash suitable pieces according to their care labels and dry them before storage. Do not put an entire unexamined bag into the closet, where useful pieces can be discovered only after the baby has outgrown them.

Give equipment a separate inspection

A used stroller, crib, carrier, or other baby product needs more than laundering. Identify the exact model and manufacture information, locate the manufacturer's instructions, and confirm that all required parts are present. Check CPSC recalls for the relevant products. Do not use an unidentifiable item because it resembles a current model in a store photo.

Some products require known history as well as visible condition. Car seats need checks through the manufacturer and NHTSA, including their history, expiration information, and required components. If you cannot establish the facts needed for safe reuse, do not put the seat into service. A generous source and clean fabric do not establish suitability.

Refuse unsafe adaptations

Do not add a generic mattress to a secondhand play yard or substitute hardware in a crib to compensate for missing pieces. Follow the manufacturer's directions for obtaining correct parts or taking the product out of use. A note saying “one piece missing” does not make it appropriate to pass the unresolved problem to another family.

Keep questionable equipment clearly out of the ready-to-use group until resolved. If the previous owner expects it back, tell them the concern. If a recall applies, follow its instructions and any required remedy rather than donating or reselling the item. Separate a product that does not suit your space from one that is unsafe for anyone to use.

Store future items with a realistic plan

Use a limited, labeled area for clothing you expect to use soon. Include size and season, and glance through it before buying more. You do not need one container for every possible future age. Storage that is too crowded to inspect defeats the purpose of receiving useful items.

Keep loans identifiable in your gear record rather than marking or tying labels to places that could interfere with use. Store manuals and permitted accessories with the relevant item. Sentimental pieces can move to a keepsake box rather than remaining mixed with daily clothing.

Finish the sorting session

Tell the giver which items were helpful and clarify any remaining return arrangements. Move suitable unwanted pieces to an agreed destination promptly. Remove packaging and take clean current clothes to their actual drawers. The benefit of hand-me-downs comes from having usable things when needed, not from keeping every bag intact as evidence of gratitude.
